Drought Struggles ©

I will keep this week’s addition quite brief, but I will try to succintly describe the depth of ‘The Big Dry’ as far as the Australian Equine World is concerned. The dry conditions that many parts of Australia are currently facing, is getting to crisis point for many farmers (Equine or not). The demand to feed stock is getting quite dire due to the poor crop seasons prior to Winter, and the fact that it is now Winter, and usually this is a time where feeds have been stocked up prior. The lack of feed stored means that there are a few suppliers who are needing to meet the feed needs of many desperate farmers wanting to feed their stock, and in our case, Equines.

So what can be done other than beginning to even consider the sale of stock if this isn’t even an option? Feed prices are increasing weekly due to the high demand, so it makes it difficult to purchase feed on a week to week basis if it can’t be purchased in bulk loads. Even when bulk loads are purchased, the lack of pasture means that animals are having to be fed more than usual to keep their condition. To cope with these two factors, unfortunately bulk loads must be bought as soon as is possible, and as often as is possible. These are truly difficult times, but for those of us that are truly passionate about continuing what we love, it is a must.

If there is a particular dietary, practical or cost effective requirement for Lucerne Hay at the moment, then unfortunately this is rarity to find. If you do find some it is most likely to increase in price often. If this uncertainty becomes too concerning, alternative feeds may need to be considered, even if this is at an added expense for a horse or horses that have not been fed anything else before.

I know that it isn’t easy coping with this added stress, however please try to keep on keeping on, and find support in your loved ones if needed. Tread wisely and keep hoping for more rain to relieve ‘The Big Dry’!
