Horse History Series #11 Harness Racing ©

Harness Racing has had it’s own culture following in this country since 1810, so quite early on in Australia’s colonial history. The main breed used for this horse sport is Thoroughbred, however other breeds can and are used. There are two types that fall under the big umbrella of “Harness Racing”: Pacer and Trotters. Pacing is more practiced in Australia and it takes place in all States. The main difference between Pacing and Trotting is the way that the gait is performed. Pacers move a set of legs on the same side at the same time, whereas Trotters perform a racing gait of moving their diagonal legs at the same time.

The biggest race in Pacing is called the Inter Dominion, and this event is held either in Australia or New Zealand. With just over an 80 year history, there has obviously been plenty of time for some stand out winners of the Inter Dominion. Cardigan Bay (NZ), Young Quinn (NZ), Caduceus, Gammalite (twice), Our Sir Vancelot (NZ) (three time winner), and of course Blacks a Fake (four time winner).

If you would like to spectate at your local Club, just look for it on the Australian Harness Racing Home Page. The Home to Pacing in the local area is no other than Club Paceway Penrith.
