Guest Blog – Hawkesbury Dressage Carnival & Tips For The Heat

Happy New Years all!
The Equestrian Community this year so far, we’ve had a few events here in NSW,
one being the Hawkesbury Dressage Carnival that was held at Clarendon Showgrounds over the 16 & 17th of Jan.
It was a very well run event, the organisers followed the COVID-19 safety rules and so did the competitors. The spirits were high with big smiles on everyone’s faces, just getting out and having a go. All the competitors and organisers were very wary of the heat, and were supplying water for both horses and humans, as well as starting the event early in the day helped. I have to say the support throughout the day from fellow competitors really showed, no matter the outcome of the test, there was always a clap or well done.

We know as a state that we can get through COVID-19, heat waves, bushfires and floods together. Yes we have some restrictions but I think most of us are just happy to be out with our horses rain, hail or shine. I hope everyone stays cool in this hot weather and here’s a friendly reminder about beating the heat with your horse.

Some handy tips for your horse to beat the hot weather
Supply water and electrocytes
Freeze some carrots and apples to make ice blocks
Supply shade or find shade where possible
Ride really early or late in the evening/night
Know your horse’s normal breathing pattern/ vital signs

Tips for us humans
Wear hats, sunblock, try not to work in the hottest part of the day
Drink water and/or hydrolyte
Find shade where possible when working outside
Know your limits nothing worse then getting heat stroke
